Merkel discusses East Germany with students.
Students from seven federal states were keen to know: “What were your personal experiences in the GDR, Chancellor?” In a discussion at the chancellery they were able to learn more about everyday life in East Germany.
The students had already gathered “own experiences” on the theme of the GDR at their schools. In recent months they had dealt with various aspects of daily life in East Germany, carried out projects, as well as interviewing eyewitnesses. Now, they also wanted to interview Angela Merkel as an eyewitness.
And the Chancellor also gave some personal insights into her life in East Germany. She talked about her childhood, her school day, the length of studies and private life in the GDR. She explained that as a child, you always had to be on your guard, to be careful what you said at school, in order not to get into trouble.
